5.0 Network+ Certification Cram Notes : Network Troubleshooting
5.2 Explain how to troubleshoot common cable connectivity issues using appropriate tools:
Explain the Common tools
1. Cable crimper: A cable crimper is a tool used to crimp or attach a connector to the end of a cable. The crimper tool applies pressure to the connector to make a secure connection between the cable and the connector.
2. Punchdown tool: A punchdown tool is used to connect wires to a terminal block or patch panel. The tool is used to terminate the wires by punching them into the designated slots or holes.
3. Tone generator: A tone generator is a tool used for tracing or locating cables. The tone generator produces an audible tone on a cable, which can then be detected by a tone probe to help identify the location of the cable.
4. Loopback adapter: A loopback adapter is a device that connects the output of a device back to its input, effectively creating a loop. It is used to test the functionality of network interfaces and to diagnose problems.
5. Optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR): An optical time-domain reflectometer is a testing tool used to measure the quality and length of optical fiber cables. The OTDR sends a light pulse down the fiber and measures the reflections to determine the length, attenuation, and other parameters of the fiber.
6. Multimeter: A multimeter is an electronic testing device that can measure multiple electrical properties such as voltage, current, and resistance. Multimeters are commonly used in network troubleshooting to test cables and electrical components.
