A+ Core 2 Certification Cram Notes : Operating Systems
1.7 Apply application installation and configuration concepts
1. OS requirements for applications:
Application to OS compatibility: Applications are designed to work with specific operating systems. Compatibility of an application with the OS is important to ensure that the application runs smoothly and efficiently. Compatibility issues can cause the application to crash or not function at all.
32-bit vs. 64-bit OS: Some applications require a 64-bit operating system to run. A 64-bit OS can handle larger amounts of RAM and can provide better performance. However, not all applications are compatible with a 64-bit OS and may require a 32-bit OS to run.
2. Distribution methods:
Physical media vs. downloadable: Applications can be distributed through physical media such as CDs, DVDs, or USB drives. Alternatively, applications can be downloaded from the internet. Downloadable applications are convenient but may require a stable internet connection.
ISO mountable: Some applications are distributed as ISO files which can be mounted as a virtual drive. This method is convenient and avoids the need for physical media.
3. Other considerations for new applications:
Impact to device: Installing a new application can have an impact on the device's performance. It is important to check the system requirements for the application and ensure that the device meets them.
Impact to network: Downloading and installing large applications can consume network resources and affect network performance. It is important to plan for this and schedule installations during off-peak hours.
